Boot Device Not Found (3F0 Error) – How to Fix
Category: Troubleshooting · Brand: HP
The "Boot Device Not Found" error (error code 3F0) typically appears on HP computers and indicates the system cannot locate a bootable device. Here's how to fix it.
What Causes the 3F0 Error?
- Corrupted or missing boot files
- Hard drive failure or loose connection
- Incorrect boot order in BIOS
- Damaged MBR (Master Boot Record)
- Failed Windows update
Fix 1: Check Boot Order in BIOS
- Restart your computer and press F9 (or F2/Esc/Del depending on model) to enter BIOS
- Navigate to the Boot tab
- Ensure your hard drive (HDD/SSD) is listed as the first boot device
- Press F10 to save and exit
Fix 2: Run HP Hard Drive Check
- Restart and press Esc to open the HP Startup menu
- Press F2 to enter System Diagnostics
- Select Hard Disk Test > Quick Test
- If the test fails, your hard drive may need replacement
Fix 3: Rebuild Boot Files (Windows)
Boot from a Windows installation USB:
- Select Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt
- Run these commands in order:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd- Restart your computer
Fix 4: Reseat the Hard Drive
Power off the computer, remove the back panel, and reseat the hard drive cable connections. A loose SATA cable is a common culprit.
Fix 5: System Restore
If boot files are corrupted after an update, use System Restore from the Windows recovery environment to roll back to a working state.
When to Replace the Hard Drive
If the HP Hard Drive Test shows SMART errors or the drive fails the test, replacement is the safest option. Consider upgrading to an SSD for better performance.
