Brother Machine Error 50 – How to Fix

Brother Machine Error 50 is a fuser unit error that indicates the fuser is not heating to the correct temperature or has malfunctioned. It appears on Brother HL, MFC, and DCP laser printers.

What Causes Machine Error 50?

  • The fuser unit is reaching end of life and needs replacement
  • A power surge or fluctuation damaged the fuser
  • The printer was left in a very cold environment and the fuser sensor is reading incorrectly
  • A firmware or initialization error (less common)

Fix 1: Power Reset (Start Here)

Many Machine Error 50 incidents clear with a full power reset:

  1. Power off the printer using the power button
  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet
  3. Leave unplugged for 10 minutes — this allows the fuser to cool completely
  4. Plug back in and power on

If the error clears, use the printer normally and monitor for recurrence.

Fix 2: Check the Fuser Unit Seating

On some models, the fuser can loosen during shipping or after paper jams:

  1. Open the rear access door (or the fuser access panel, depending on model)
  2. The fuser unit is the gray or black assembly with two rollers
  3. Push it firmly in and ensure any retaining tabs are locked
  4. Close the panel and power on

Fix 3: Replace the Fuser Unit

If the error returns after every power cycle, the fuser has failed and needs replacement:

  1. Find your printer's fuser part number — search "[your model number] fuser unit" on Amazon or the Brother parts site
  2. Power off and unplug the printer completely
  3. Open the rear or side access panel to the fuser
  4. Remove the old fuser by pressing the release tabs and pulling it out
  5. Insert the new fuser until the tabs click into place
  6. Close all panels and power on

Note: The fuser is very hot immediately after printing — always wait 10 minutes after a print job before touching the fuser area.
