Epson Error Code 000031 – How to Fix

Epson error code 000031 indicates a scanner carriage fault — the scanner unit is unable to complete its initialization movement. This appears most often on EcoTank and WorkForce all-in-one models.

What Causes Error Code 000031?

  • The scanner carriage lock is still engaged (common on new printers)
  • Something is obstructing the scanner glass or carriage movement
  • A firmware or initialization error
  • A failing scanner carriage motor (rare)

Fix 1: Release the Scanner Carriage Lock (New Printers)

Epson printers ship with a scanner lock to protect the carriage during shipping:

  1. Open the scanner unit (lift the glass flatbed portion of the printer)
  2. Look for a blue or green tab or lock lever on the right or left side of the carriage mechanism underneath the scanner
  3. Slide or flip the lock to the unlocked position (usually labeled with a lock icon)
  4. Close the scanner unit and power cycle the printer

Fix 2: Clear the Scanner Path

  1. Open the ADF (automatic document feeder) lid if your model has one
  2. Check for any paper, clips, or debris on the scanner glass
  3. Open the flatbed lid and gently clean the glass with a soft, lint-free cloth
  4. Power cycle the printer

Fix 3: Power Cycle Fully

  1. Press the power button to turn off the printer
  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall
  3. Wait 3 minutes
  4. Plug back in and power on — the scanner will re-initialize

Fix 4: Update the Firmware

  1. Connect the printer to Wi-Fi or USB
  2. Open Epson Software Updater (included with the driver, or download from Epson's site)
  3. Check for and install any available firmware updates
  4. Restart the printer after updating

Fix 5: Epson Service Reset

If the error persists, the printer may need a service reset. Download Epson Adjustment Program (available from Epson service centers or authorized repair sites) to reset the scanner counters.
