Category: Troubleshooting · Brand: HP

The HP "Ink System Failure" error can appear on HP OfficeJet, DeskJet, and ENVY printers. It means the printer cannot detect or communicate with the ink cartridges properly.

Fix 1: Power Reset

  1. With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer
  2. Unplug from the wall outlet
  3. Wait 60 seconds
  4. Reconnect to the wall first, then to the printer
  5. Turn on and wait for startup to complete

Fix 2: Remove and Reseat Cartridges

  1. Open the cartridge access door
  2. Wait for the carriage to stop moving
  3. Remove all cartridges
  4. Wait 30 seconds
  5. Reinsert each cartridge firmly until it clicks
  6. Close the door

Fix 3: Clean Cartridge Contacts

  1. Remove the cartridges
  2. Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water
  3. Gently clean the gold contacts on each cartridge
  4. Also clean the corresponding contacts in the cartridge slots
  5. Let dry fully before reinserting

Fix 4: Use Genuine HP Cartridges

Third-party cartridges sometimes trigger ink system failures. Try with a genuine HP cartridge to confirm.

Fix 5: Update Printer Firmware

  1. On the printer's display, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer
  2. Or download firmware via HP Smart app

Fix 6: Factory Reset the Printer
