Fix HP Scanner Not Working Issue
Category: Troubleshooting · Brand: HP
When your HP printer's scanner stops working, the cause is typically a driver issue, Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service problem, or connection problem.
Fix 1: Restart WIA Service (Windows)
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc - Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)
- Right-click → Restart
- Also restart Shell Hardware Detection and Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Fix 2: Run HP Print and Scan Doctor
HP's free tool automatically diagnoses and fixes scanner issues. Download from HP's support site and run the scan fix option.
Fix 3: Update or Reinstall HP Driver
- Uninstall current HP software from Control Panel > Programs
- Go to HP's support site, search your model
- Download HP Easy Start or the full software suite
- Reinstall and restart
Fix 4: Check HP Scan Software
- Open HP Smart or HP Scan
- If the scanner doesn't appear, click Manage → Add a printer or scanner
- Let the software rediscover your device
Fix 5: Check for Conflicts
Third-party scanning software can conflict with HP's scanner driver. Temporarily disable other scanning apps.
Fix 6: Fix Scanner on Mac
- Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners
- Select your HP printer/scanner
- Click Open Scanner to test
- If it fails, delete and re-add the printer
Fix 7: Scan Using ICA Driver (Mac)
macOS uses the ICA (Image Capture Architecture) framework. Open Image Capture app (in Applications) and see if your HP scanner appears there.
