Fix Printer Ghosting Issue in Laser Printers
Category: Troubleshooting
Ghosting in laser printers produces faint repeated images of previous printed content appearing elsewhere on the page. It's a mechanical/hardware issue with specific causes.
Types of Ghosting
Positive ghosting: A faint duplicate of dark content appears behind it
Negative ghosting: A lighter version (washed-out area) of previous content appears
Memory ghosting: The ghost image appears one full page later
Cause 1: Worn Drum Unit
The drum unit retains charge from a previous page. A worn drum can't discharge completely, causing ghost images.
Fix: Replace the drum unit. Drum life varies by model — typically 12,000–25,000 pages.
Cause 2: Fuser Issues
The fuser unit bonds toner to paper using heat. If the fuser roller is worn or contaminated, it can re-deposit toner in a ghost pattern.
Fix: Replace the fuser unit. Ensure the fuser temperature setting matches the paper type.
Cause 3: Developer/Toner Issues
Low toner causes uneven coverage leading to ghost images. A damaged developer roller has the same effect.
Fix: Shake the toner cartridge to redistribute toner. Replace if empty.
Cause 4: Incorrect Paper
Paper that's too thick, coated, or glossy (not rated for laser printing) causes toner not to fuse correctly.
Fix: Use laser-compatible paper rated for your printer.
Cause 5: Transfer Roller Contamination
A dirty transfer roller can leave residual charge patterns on the drum.
Fix: Clean or replace the transfer roller.
