How to Add a Printer to iPhone – AirPrint & App Methods

Category: Setup

Adding a printer to an iPhone is wireless-only — iPhones cannot connect to printers via USB. The easiest method is AirPrint, which works with most modern printers without installing anything.

Method 1: AirPrint (No App Needed)

AirPrint is built into iOS and works with any AirPrint-compatible printer on the same Wi-Fi network.

Check if your printer supports AirPrint:

Most HP, Canon, Epson, and Brother printers made after 2014 support AirPrint. Check Apple's AirPrint printer list at apple.com.

To print via AirPrint:

  1. Open any document, photo, or webpage on your iPhone
  2. Tap the Share icon (square with upward arrow)
  3. Scroll down and tap Print
  4. Tap Select Printer — your AirPrint printer appears automatically if it's on the same Wi-Fi
  5. Set copies and pages, then tap Print

Method 2: HP Smart App (HP Printers)

  1. Download HP Smart from the App Store
  2. Open the app and tap + to add your HP printer
  3. Follow the in-app setup — the app can also connect the printer to Wi-Fi for the first time
  4. Once added, print from any app via Share > Print > Select Printer

Method 3: Canon PRINT App (Canon Printers)

  1. Download Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY from the App Store
  2. Tap + and select your Canon printer model
  3. The app connects and allows printing directly from photos, documents, and web pages

Method 4: Epson Smart Panel App (Epson Printers)

  1. Download Epson Smart Panel from the App Store
  2. Follow the setup to connect your Epson printer
  3. Print from photos, documents, or directly from the app's built-in browser

Method 5: Printer Pro (Universal, Third-Party)

Printer Pro (paid app) works with virtually any Wi-Fi printer, including older models without AirPrint:

  1. Download Printer Pro from the App Store
  2. The app detects printers on your network automatically
  3. Print PDFs, photos, emails, and web pages

Troubleshooting: Printer Not Showing Up on iPhone

  • Ensure your iPhone and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network
  • Disable VPN on your iPhone temporarily — VPN can block local network discovery
  • Restart both your iPhone and the printer
  • If using a dual-band router, make sure both devices are on the 2.4 GHz or both on 5 GHz band
