How to Change Ink in Epson Printer

Category: How-To · Brand: Epson

Changing ink in an Epson printer differs depending on whether you have a traditional cartridge model (Expression, WorkForce) or an EcoTank model.

Changing Ink Cartridges (Expression/WorkForce Series)

  1. Open the printer lid or front cover
  2. Wait for the ink carriage to move to the replacement position
  3. Press down on the cartridge to release it and pull it out
  4. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging
  5. Pull off the yellow tape seal — do not touch the chip or ink ports
  6. Insert the new cartridge at a slight angle and push until it clicks
  7. Close the cover — the printer will charge the ink system

Refilling EcoTank Ink Bottles

EcoTank printers use refillable tanks instead of cartridges:

  1. Open the ink tank cover (located on the side or front of the printer)
  2. Find the tank for the color you're refilling
  3. Remove the tank cap and place it upside down nearby
  4. Take the matching ink bottle and remove its cap/seal
  5. Insert the bottle tip into the tank opening
  6. Squeeze gently — the ink will flow in automatically when you stop squeezing
  7. Fill to the maximum line — do not overfill
  8. Replace the tank cap securely
  9. Close the tank cover

Identifying the Correct Ink

  • Check the cartridge access door label or your printer manual for the cartridge/bottle number
  • EcoTank ink bottles are color-coded and model-specific — 001, 003, 004, 102, 104 series vary by region

After Replacing Ink

Run a nozzle check from Epson Utility > Nozzle Check to verify all colors are printing correctly. If gaps appear, run a print head cleaning cycle.
