How to Change Ink in Epson Printer
Category: How-To · Brand: Epson
Changing ink in an Epson printer differs depending on whether you have a traditional cartridge model (Expression, WorkForce) or an EcoTank model.
Changing Ink Cartridges (Expression/WorkForce Series)
- Open the printer lid or front cover
- Wait for the ink carriage to move to the replacement position
- Press down on the cartridge to release it and pull it out
- Remove the new cartridge from its packaging
- Pull off the yellow tape seal — do not touch the chip or ink ports
- Insert the new cartridge at a slight angle and push until it clicks
- Close the cover — the printer will charge the ink system
Refilling EcoTank Ink Bottles
EcoTank printers use refillable tanks instead of cartridges:
- Open the ink tank cover (located on the side or front of the printer)
- Find the tank for the color you're refilling
- Remove the tank cap and place it upside down nearby
- Take the matching ink bottle and remove its cap/seal
- Insert the bottle tip into the tank opening
- Squeeze gently — the ink will flow in automatically when you stop squeezing
- Fill to the maximum line — do not overfill
- Replace the tank cap securely
- Close the tank cover
Identifying the Correct Ink
- Check the cartridge access door label or your printer manual for the cartridge/bottle number
- EcoTank ink bottles are color-coded and model-specific — 001, 003, 004, 102, 104 series vary by region
After Replacing Ink
Run a nozzle check from Epson Utility > Nozzle Check to verify all colors are printing correctly. If gaps appear, run a print head cleaning cycle.
