How to Connect a Printer to WiFi Without WPS
Category: Setup
Not all routers have a WPS button, and some users disable WPS for security reasons. You can connect any wireless printer to Wi-Fi without it using the methods below.
Method 1: Printer Control Panel Wireless Setup Wizard
Most wireless printers include a Wireless Setup Wizard in the menu:
HP Printers:
- On the printer, press the Wireless button or go to Setup > Network Setup > Wireless Setup Wizard
- Select your network from the list and enter the password
Canon Printers:
- Go to Setup > Device Settings > LAN Settings > Wireless LAN Setup > Standard Setup
- Select your network and enter the password
Epson Printers:
- On the touchscreen: Settings > Wi-Fi Setup > Wi-Fi Setup Wizard
- Select your network and enter the password
Brother Printers:
- Press Menu > Network > WLAN > Setup Wizard
- Select your network and enter the password
Method 2: USB Temporary Connection (Install Then Switch to Wi-Fi)
If the wireless wizard isn't working, most printer drivers let you start with USB and switch to wireless:
- Connect the printer to your computer via USB
- Run the full printer software installer from the manufacturer's website
- During installation, select Wireless Network as the connection type
- The installer sends the Wi-Fi credentials to the printer over USB
- Disconnect the USB — the printer now uses Wi-Fi
Method 3: Printer Web Interface (For Network-Connected Printers)
If the printer is connected to your network via Ethernet:
- Print a configuration page to find the printer's IP address
- Open a browser and type the IP address
- Log into the printer's web interface (default credentials are usually admin/admin or blank)
- Go to Network > Wireless and enter your Wi-Fi credentials
Method 4: Manufacturer Setup App
All major brands offer setup apps that handle Wi-Fi configuration without WPS:
- HP Smart (iOS, Android, Windows, Mac)
- Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY (iOS, Android)
- Epson Smart Panel (iOS, Android)
- Brother Mobile Connect (iOS, Android)
These apps use Bluetooth or a temporary hotspot to transfer your Wi-Fi credentials to the printer.
Troubleshooting
Password not accepted: Double-check for capital letters and special characters — Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive.
Network not found: Make sure you're looking for the 2.4 GHz network. Most printers cannot connect to 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
Setup fails after entering password: Move the printer closer to the router during setup — weak signal can cause the connection to fail even with the correct password.
