How to Fix HP Printer Alignment Failed Issue
Category: Troubleshooting · Brand: HP
HP printers run an automatic alignment after installing new ink cartridges. An alignment failure means the printer couldn't read the alignment page properly.
What Causes HP Printer Alignment to Fail?
- Incorrect paper loaded (alignment requires plain white paper)
- Dirty or defective cartridge contacts
- Clogged print head nozzles
- Scanner glass is dirty
- Cartridge not installed correctly
Fix 1: Check Paper Type
- Ensure you have plain white letter/A4 paper loaded in the main tray
- Photo paper, colored paper, or glossy paper will cause alignment to fail
- Remove and re-load paper to ensure it's properly aligned in the tray
Fix 2: Clean the Scanner Glass
The printer scans the alignment page to calibrate. A dirty scanner glass reads it incorrectly:
- Open the scanner lid
- Wipe the glass with a lint-free cloth and a small amount of glass cleaner
- Dry completely and try alignment again
Fix 3: Reseat the Ink Cartridges
- Open the cartridge access door
- Remove each cartridge
- Wipe the gold contacts with a dry lint-free cloth
- Reseat each cartridge firmly until it clicks
- Run alignment again
Fix 4: Run Print Head Cleaning
- Open HP Printer Software > Printer Maintenance
- Select Clean Print Heads
- After cleaning, try the alignment again
Fix 5: Manual Alignment
If automatic alignment keeps failing, try manual alignment:
**HP Printer Software > Printer Maintenance > Align Print Cartridges > Manual
