How to Fix HP Printer Says 'Out of Paper'
Category: Troubleshooting · Brand: HP
When an HP printer says "out of paper" but paper is loaded, it's usually a paper sensor, roller, or tray detection issue.
Fix 1: Remove and Reload Paper Correctly
- Remove all paper from the tray
- Fan the paper stack to separate the sheets
- Tap the stack on a flat surface to align the edges
- Load no more than 25 sheets at a time for troubleshooting
- Ensure the paper guides are snug against the paper but not tight
- Press OK or Resume on the printer
Fix 2: Clean the Paper Pickup Rollers
Dusty or worn rollers can't grip paper, causing a false "out of paper" detection:
- Power off the printer and unplug it
- Open the rear access panel or the paper tray
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water to wipe the rubber pickup rollers
- Let dry completely before testing
Fix 3: Check the Paper Sensor
On some HP DeskJet models, a small plastic arm in the paper tray is the paper sensor. Ensure it moves freely and isn't stuck in the "empty" position.
Fix 4: Load Paper in Photo Tray (for Photo Printers)
Some HP printers require paper specifically in the photo/specialty tray for photo print jobs. Check the selected paper source matches where the paper is loaded.
Fix 5: Update Firmware
Firmware bugs have caused false "out of paper" errors on several HP OfficeJet models. Update firmware via HP Smart or the printer's control panel.
