How to Fix an HP Printer That Prints Blank Pages
Category: Troubleshooting · Brand: HP
An HP printer that outputs blank pages is one of the most common support issues. In almost every case the cause is low or dried ink, a clogged printhead, or a corrupt print job.
Why Is My HP Printer Printing Blank Pages?
The three most common causes are:
- Empty or low ink cartridges — the printer fires but there is nothing to put on the page
- Clogged or dried printhead nozzles — ink cannot flow even though the cartridge has ink
- Incorrectly installed cartridges — the protective tape was not removed, or the cartridge is seated wrong
Step 1: Check Ink Levels
- Open HP Smart on your computer or phone
- Select your printer and go to Printer Info or Supply Levels
- Replace any cartridge showing low or empty
If levels look fine, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Remove and Reseat Cartridges
- Open the cartridge access door — the carriage will move to the center
- Remove each cartridge by pressing the tab and pulling it out
- Look for any orange protective tape on the ink nozzle area — peel it off if present
- Inspect the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer — wipe gently with a dry lint-free cloth
- Reseat each cartridge firmly until it clicks
Step 3: Run a Printhead Cleaning
- Open HP Smart and go to Advanced Settings or Printer Maintenance
- Select Clean Printheads and follow the prompts
- Print a test page after the cleaning cycle completes
- If still blank, run the cleaning a second time
Alternatively, from a Windows PC go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click your HP printer, select Printing Preferences > Services > Clean the print cartridges.
Step 4: Align the Printhead
After cleaning, run a printhead alignment:
- In HP Smart go to Printer Maintenance > Align Printheads
- The printer will print an alignment page — follow any on-screen instructions
Step 5: Check the Print Job
A corrupt or incorrectly configured document can produce blank output:
- Open Notepad and type a few words
- Print it directly — if it prints correctly, the issue is with the original document or app
Step 6: Update or Reinstall the Driver
- Visit HP's support site and download the latest full-feature driver for your model
- Run the uninstaller first, restart your PC, then install the fresh driver
