How to Fix HP Printer Won't Recognize New Cartridge
Category: Troubleshooting · Brand: HP
When an HP printer doesn't recognize a new cartridge, it's typically a contact issue, an incompatible cartridge, or a firmware restriction on third-party ink.
Fix 1: Remove and Reseat the Cartridge
- Open the cartridge access door
- Remove the new cartridge
- Make sure the orange pull tab and protective tape are fully removed
- Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks
- Close the door and wait for the printer to cycle
Fix 2: Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Remove the cartridge
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water
- Gently clean the gold copper contacts on the bottom of the cartridge
- Also clean the corresponding contacts inside the printer
- Let both dry completely (at least 5 minutes) before reinserting
Fix 3: Verify Cartridge Compatibility
Ensure the cartridge number matches what's required for your HP printer. The correct cartridge number is printed inside the cartridge access door.
Common mismatches:
- HP 63 vs HP 65 (different profiles, not interchangeable)
- HP 902 vs HP 952 (different ink volume and series)
Fix 4: Third-Party Cartridge Restrictions
HP printers may reject third-party (non-OEM) cartridges after a firmware update. To use compatible cartridges, check if a firmware downgrade is available, or look for the "Accept" option when the printer displays the "non-HP cartridge" warning.
Fix 5: Power Reset
- With the printer on, unplug the power cord
- Wait 60 seconds
- Plug back in
- Turn on and reinsert the cartridge
