Ricoh SC Error Codes – What They Mean and How to Fix Them

Category: Troubleshooting · Brand: Ricoh

Ricoh SC (Service Call) error codes indicate hardware faults that require attention. Some can be cleared by the user; others require a service technician.

What Is a Ricoh SC Code?

SC codes are categorized by number range:

RangeCategory
SC1xxScanning / image reading errors
SC2xxLaser / imaging errors
SC3xxCharge / development errors
SC4xx / SC5xxFusing / fixing unit errors
SC6xxCommunication errors
SC7xxMechanical errors
SC9xxController / software errors

Most Common SC Codes and Fixes

SC541 / SC542 / SC543 / SC544 — Fuser Errors

These are the most frequent SC codes. They indicate the fusing unit is not reaching or maintaining the correct temperature.

Cause: Aging fusing unit, power fluctuation, or thermistor failure.

User fix:

  1. Power off the printer completely and unplug it from the wall
  2. Wait 10–15 minutes to let the fuser cool down
  3. Plug back in and power on — the error may clear on its own
  4. If it returns after several attempts, the fusing unit needs replacement

SC400 — Transfer Belt / Charge Unit

Cause: Transfer belt worn or charge roller issue.

Fix: Power cycle the printer. If persistent, the transfer belt or charge unit requires replacement by a technician.

SC320 / SC322 — Toner Near Empty / Supply Fault

Cause: Toner cartridge not recognized or improperly installed.

Fix:

  1. Open the front cover
  2. Remove the toner cartridge, shake it gently, and reinstall
  3. Ensure the cartridge contacts are clean — wipe with a dry cloth

SC990 — Printer Controller Error

Cause: Firmware issue or memory corruption.

Fix:

  1. Power cycle the printer
  2. If persistent, perform a factory reset: Menu > System Settings > Administrator Tools > Reset Settings
  3. Reinstall or update the firmware from support.ricoh.com

Clearing an SC Code (User Reset)

For non-critical SC codes, you can attempt a user reset:

  1. Power off the printer
  2. Hold the # key (or Clear key on some models) while powering on
  3. Release when the display shows — the code may be cleared

Note: If the SC code returns immediately or within a few print cycles, the underlying hardware fault must be repaired.

When to Call a Technician

SC codes in the SC5xx fuser range that cannot be cleared, or any SC1xx–SC3xx imaging system codes that persist after power cycling, typically require on-site service.
