Why Is My HP Printer Not Printing Black?
Category: Troubleshooting · Brand: HP
When an HP printer won't print black ink but prints colors fine, the black cartridge or its nozzles are the issue — not the printer itself.
Why Is Only Black Not Printing?
- Clogged black ink nozzles (most common)
- Empty or nearly empty black cartridge
- Defective black cartridge
- Incorrect print settings (set to color only)
Fix 1: Check Black Ink Level
Open HP Printer Software > Estimated Ink Levels or the HP Smart app. If the black cartridge is low or empty, replace it.
Fix 2: Run Print Head Cleaning
- Open HP Printer Software > Printer Maintenance > Clean Print Cartridges
- Select Black cartridge cleaning
- Print a nozzle check test page
- Repeat up to 3 times if nozzles are still blocked
Fix 3: Try a New Black Cartridge
If cleaning doesn't restore black printing, the cartridge may be defective. Install a new genuine HP black cartridge.
Fix 4: Clean Nozzles Manually
- Remove the black cartridge
- Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water
- Gently blot (don't scrub) the nozzle plate — the tiny holes at the bottom
- Let dry for 10 minutes
- Reinstall and test
Fix 5: Check Print Settings
In the print dialog:
- Look for Color Options or Grayscale
- Ensure you're not set to Color Only or printing in Grayscale using color ink only
Fix 6: Check Composite Black Setting
Some HP printers can print black using color inks combined. This is a workaround while waiting for a new black cartridge:
Printer Properties > Color > Use color inks for black printing
