Why Is My HP Printer Printing So Small?
Category: Troubleshooting · Brand: HP
If your HP printer is printing documents that are too small, it's almost always a scaling, paper size, or print settings issue — easy to fix.
Cause 1: Wrong Paper Size Selected
If you're printing on Letter paper but the document is set to A4 (or vice versa), the output appears smaller than expected.
Fix:
- Open Print dialog > Properties
- Under Paper/Quality, set the paper size to match the paper actually loaded
- Print again
Cause 2: Scale to Fit is Enabled
Print dialog > Properties > Advanced > Paper/Output > Scale to fit > Turn OFFOr set the scale to 100%.
Cause 3: Application-Level Scaling
Some applications (Word, Chrome, PDF readers) have their own page scaling settings:
- Word: File > Print > No Scaling (or adjust to 100%)
- Chrome: Right-click > Print > More settings > Scale > 100
- Adobe Acrobat: File > Print > Page Sizing & Handling > Actual Size
Cause 4: HP Print Settings Default
- Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers
- Right-click your HP printer → Printing preferences
- Go to the Effects tab or Advanced tab
- Set Document Options > Scale to 100%
- Click OK
Cause 5: Shrink Oversized Pages is ON
In the HP printer preferences, look for "Shrink oversized document" and disable it.
