Xerox WorkCentre Error Codes – Fixes for Common Faults
Category: Troubleshooting · Brand: Xerox
Xerox WorkCentre and VersaLink printers display numeric or alphanumeric error codes on the touchscreen when a fault occurs. Most can be resolved without a service call.
How to Read Xerox Error Codes
Xerox errors appear as three-digit codes (e.g., 024-xxx, 016-xxx) on the control panel. The first set of digits indicates the subsystem.
| Code Range | Subsystem |
| 016-xxx | Network / connectivity |
| 024-xxx | Scan / fax |
| 027-xxx | Communication (email/fax) |
| 071-xxx | Paper / media handling |
| 077-xxx | Fuser / fixing unit |
| 091-xxx / 094-xxx | Drum / toner unit |
Common Error Codes and Fixes
016-302 / 016-310 — Network Connection Error
Cause: The printer cannot connect to the network or cannot reach the mail server.
Fix:
- Check the network cable or Wi-Fi connection
- On the control panel go to Tools > Network Settings > Ethernet and confirm settings
- Verify DNS and gateway settings match your network
024-747 — Scan Communication Error
Cause: Scan-to-email or scan-to-folder communication failure.
Fix:
- Verify the SMTP server settings: Tools > Network Settings > Email / SMTP
- Check that the SMTP port (587 or 465) is not blocked by your firewall
- Test with a known-good email address
077-900 / 077-910 — Fuser Temperature Error
Cause: The fuser is not reaching the correct temperature — usually age or a cold start issue.
Fix:
- Power off the printer and unplug it for 10 minutes
- Power back on — the fuser error often clears on cold restart
- If persistent, the fuser unit needs replacement
091-317 / 091-400 — Toner Cartridge Not Recognized
Cause: Toner cartridge improperly seated or contacts are dirty.
Fix:
- Open the front door and remove the toner cartridge
- Clean the cartridge contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth
- Reinstall firmly and close the door
Paper Jam Codes (071-xxx)
- Open all access doors — front, rear, and any duplexer panels
- Gently pull the jammed paper in the direction of travel — do not tear
- Check for small torn pieces of paper that may remain in the paper path
- Close all doors and press Clear on the touchscreen
Resetting the Printer
For persistent errors that will not clear:
- Power off and unplug for 60 seconds
- Hold the power button while plugging back in (model-dependent)
- Or from the control panel: Tools > Administrator Settings > Resets > Reset All
