How to Replace Toner in a Panasonic KX Printer

Panasonic KX laser printers use a separate toner cartridge and drum unit. When toner runs out, only the toner cartridge needs to be replaced — the drum unit lasts significantly longer.

Toner vs. Drum Unit

Toner cartridge (e.g., KX-FAT410) — contains the toner powder; replace when the printer shows a toner warning
Drum unit (e.g., KX-FAD412) — the imaging component; typically lasts 3–5 toner replacements before needing replacement

When to Replace Toner

The printer display will show Toner Low or Replace Toner. You may also notice faded prints or vertical streaks.

Step 1: Open the Printer

Press the Open button or pull the front cover release handle
The front cover swings open, exposing the toner cartridge and drum unit

Step 2: Remove the Old Toner Cartridge

Grasp the toner cartridge by its handle — it sits on top of the drum unit
Lift it straight up and out of the drum unit
Place the old cartridge in a bag for disposal — Panasonic offers a recycling program

Step 3: Install the New Toner Cartridge

Remove the new toner cartridge from its packaging
Shake it gently 5–6 times side to side to evenly distribute the toner
Remove any protective tape or film from the cartridge
Lower the new cartridge into the drum unit — align the arrows on the cartridge with the guides in the drum unit and press down until it clicks into place

Step 4: Close the Printer

Close the front cover firmly until it latches
The printer will display a ready status once it initializes

Replacing the Drum Unit

When the printer shows Replace Drum or prints become noticeably streaky even with a new toner:

Open the front cover
Remove the toner cartridge (as above)
Lift the drum unit out by its handle
Place the toner cartridge into the new drum unit
Reinstall the drum unit and toner together into the printer
Close the cover
