How to Replace Toner in a Ricoh Printer
Category: Hardware · Brand: Ricoh
Ricoh printers display a toner warning when ink is running low. Toner replacement is quick and takes about two minutes on most SP and MP models.
Step 1: Identify the Right Toner Cartridge
Find your toner part number on:
- The printer's display: Menu > Maintenance > Supply Info
- The label inside the front or top cover of the printer
- Your printer model's manual
Common Ricoh toner numbers:
- SP 201HA / SP 200 — compact mono laser
- SP C250S / C310HA — color laser (4 cartridges: black, cyan, magenta, yellow)
- MP 501 / 601 — high-volume MFP
Step 2: Open the Printer
Front-opening models (most SP series):
- Pull the front cover release lever and open the front cover downward
Top-opening models (some SP and MP series):
- Lift the top scanner unit or open the top cover
Front-door models (MP MFPs):
- Open the main front door
Step 3: Remove the Old Toner Cartridge
- Locate the toner cartridge — it sits in a slot or on a rail inside the printer
- Turn the toner lock knob counterclockwise (if present) to unlock
- Lift or pull the cartridge out by its handle
- Place in a plastic bag for disposal
Step 4: Install the New Toner Cartridge
- Remove the new cartridge from packaging
- Shake it gently 5–6 times horizontally to distribute toner evenly
- Remove any protective tape or cover
- For color printers: match the cartridge color to the labeled slot
- Slide or lower the cartridge into position along the guide rails
- Turn the lock knob clockwise (if applicable) to lock it in place
Step 5: Close and Test
- Close the cover firmly
- The printer will initialize — wait for the ready indicator
- Print a test page to confirm print quality
Troubleshooting After Replacement
Toner warning still showing: Open and reseat the cartridge — it may not be fully locked in. Power cycle the printer.
Streaks on prints: The new toner may need a few pages to distribute evenly — print 3–5 pages to clear.
